CARBON FREE – GREENHOUSE GAS OFFSET
CARBOCLIMA
All activities in industry and society emit greenhouse gases (GHG),
whose increasing concentration in the atmosphere leads to global
warming, thus making reductions in greenhouse gas emissions a worldwide
concern.
Within this context, the Local Organizing Committee of HTAi 2011 has
signed a partnership with CarboClima with the aim of turning the event
into an example of sustainability. CarboClima is a Brazilian
environmental consulting company specializing in greenhouse gas
management.
The event is expected to receive approximately one thousand
participants, in addition to the number of professionals involved on an
on-going basis. An event of this magnitude has the potential to generate
a large amount of greenhouse gases, but it also provides an opportunity
to demonstrate a difference as an activity conducted with environmental
responsibility.
CarboClima will produce an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions
generated during the production and the event itself, using the GHG
Protocol, a methodology developed by the WRI (World Resources
Institute). The calculations are based on research by the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a body consisting of
some 2,500 scientists from more than 130 countries that provides the
backing for United Nations decisions on climate change, like the Kyoto
Protocol.
In developing the inventory, CarboClima identifies and tabulates the
emission sources. Based on the results, an analysis will be done on GHG
management opportunities aimed at using best practices to achieve
reduction, reuse, and recycling in order to reduce such emissions. The
emissions that cannot be avoided will be compensated for through
voluntary mitigation measures.
CarboClima will participate in and assist the LOC in all stages of the HTAi 2011 Conference.
